2016 color trends

It's December again and since Etsy success requires that we keep looking ahead, let's just pretend it's 2016! I don't post many treasuries but I made this one of 2016 color trends and wanted to save it here for posterity's sake. To find the items I used a combination of casual browsing like always, but leaned heavily on the color app on my widgets page that lets me type in any hex code and find Etsy items that match.

The treasury:

Survey of spoonflower colors - full saturation to black gradient

Spoonflower requires that designers order swatches of their designs before publishing. It's a good policy, because print often looks different than screen, especially with darker colors. Dark blue can easily wind up just being black. Subtle variations are often totally lost.

To help me out recently, I printed a swatch that crosses all hues, fading into black. Here was the original graphic I uploaded:

And here was the printed fabric on kona cotton:

I then made a "color averaged" version.

Now when I design my fabrics in GIMP, I have a two-layer file with my color averaged file on the top layer, "graphic" one underneath. I pick out what I want a color to look like using the color-averaged version, but "grab" the original version of it.

I plan to do some other gradients with this method... for example, I'm still trying to figure out how to get brown. Pastels are a lot easier on spoonflower, much more likely to come out looking like they do on the screen.

2013 trending color: flat brown

Earlier in the year pantone announced that emerald green was making a huge comeback and would totally be the color of 2013. This has proven to be total crap, which is a shame because it looks good on me, but seriously we're not seeing it anywhere. I'm not sure who emerald paid off at pantone to get such a nice prediction made out of it, but it didn't work.

No, the real trending colors for the year seem to be flat ones. Low saturation, neutral, relaxing, and homemade-looking. With that in mind, I've chosen a nice flat brown for my latest spoonflower fabric: geek glasses on flat brown

The color: #AB9073. I seriously compared a spoonflower color sample swatch to a chunk of cardboard. Don't laugh, I love it.

Here, I will put chevrons on it:

And this pattern I made over at colourlovers:

Featured artist: feltinga felted scarves, jewelry, and accessories

Once again in March we had a treasury challenge, and although we picked two winners the hands-down favorite among judges was Above Us Is Blue Sky Only by Ingrida from feltinga. We'll be featuring her items in the April treasury challenge, but her shop is so lovely I wanted to ask some questions about her inspirations ahead of all that, on April 1st in fact because today she's been on Etsy for one year! Happy anniversary!

You can find her on twitter @ingaleske or on pinterest at pinterest.com/ingaleske.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I live in Lithuania, small country in East Europe. My full time job is not related with crafts – I am civil servant. So when I am at home I need to do very different things: to give a rest for my brain, to give a job for my hands and to release my fantasy. Of course, so far as my masculine family – husband and two sons (7 and 15) - lets (they are always hungry)? But... they are my best helpers in IT, photo making and even products making – few of listings in Feltinga are made by my elder son!

What got started making handmade items?
I've became acquainted with felting some 10 years ago when birth of small felt ball caught my eye during the public event of our regional museum. But it took about 5 years to summon up my courage, to find free time, to set free the fancy in order to take a flock of wool into my hands. And now I can't imagine my leisure without felting. Wool is amazing material, very plastic and very friendly with the fuller, wearer and other materials composing solid work. I do not limit myself doing one kind works. Brooches, necklaces, earings, wristlets, bracelets, slippers, wool decorated glass vases, belts, shawls, and gloves do not make up the finite list of the range of my creative works.

What got you to open your shop on etsy?
My colleague knew my passion for felting and once she showed me cute felted product on internet. The product was listed on Etsy. I started to browse and suddenly it become clear that Etsy was what I needed - the place for my creations and a mean for my little extra?

What's your home like?
Felting is my hobby, not my full time job, so I have no special studio for it. That‘s why I get use of every premise in our house: I keep my supplies in cloakroom, felt in bathroom or sitting room, use to dry my felts near fireplace or in the warmest house place near the big window, make pictures under the skylight....So our house looks like a house of people with lots of hobbies: my children love LEGO, husband loves DIY, model making, gardening... And... my felts? We have no pets, so my felts are safe here.

What inspires you?
Colors... I love all colors: bright, neutral, pastel, pale, dark...Now I miss spring, it is so cold here, so I compensate this shortage with the colors of my felts. Constantly changing nature, flowers, sky...

Tips for other etsy artists?
Do what you like to do... Do with love and patience. Make good pictures. Improve your good pictures into better and the better - into best ones... Improve your shop every day. Share the love by making treasuries and communicating with your clients and colleagues. Participate in teams' activity.

Most important thing you've changed about your shop or products since starting on etsy?
I've placed my first listings on the 1st of April 2012, so Feltinga will celebrate its first birthday very soon. It was very interesting, very intensive, very challenging and very impressive year. I met a lot of fantastic people who helped me a lot, and I participated in very active, friendly and supportive teams. Etsy friends explained me how important pictures are, how should I improve them, what felt products should sell themselves, where I can find fantastic supplies for my craft. So my shop is constantly changing beginning with banner (thank you, my son Marius), pictures, tags, descriptions and ending with renewing and growing stock. One of my etsy colleagues, Vaida, even made fantastic photos of my felted balls and now they are very popular in treasures! I‘d recommend to visit her beautiful shops vart and vaidaphoto on etsy too!

Have you bought anything cool off etsy lately?
Yes, superb LEGO hand made soaps at OhSoSmelly and a charity pot holder, made by 10 year old Lucy at FishCreek.

It was SO CUTE I had to click on the whole shop, favorite it, and interview the artist, you know how it is. kelliechristie's shop is colorful and delightful, and you can find her on facebook as well.

What got started making handmade items?
Kellie Christie Design developed from a serious jewellery obsession. I love my jewellery and never leave the house without wearing a necklace, earrings and a bangle or a chunky ring. However I love unique pieces that you can't buy just anywhere and used to struggle to find those special pieces so began making my own.

Kellie Christie Design was born after I finished my university degree in Fine Art. I was working full time by day and creating by night. As I developed my products and brand I began selling through various retail stores and also at local handmade craft markets.

Becoming a full time parent has given me the time and freedom to develop my brand and learn exciting new techniques. I have worked with many different techniques from simple beading with resin beads and buttons, making my own resin buttons, resin jewellery and more recently shrink plastic jewellery.

What got you to open your shop on etsy?
I discovered the world of etsy completely by accident and then spent hours and days just looking at the amazing creations by other people. I felt really inspired and loved that Etsy was all about handmade products and created my shop straight away.

What's your home like?
VERY LOUD! I have 2 boys who are into the usual boy stuff so my house has lego, matchbox cars and skylanders everywhere. My creating time is usually at night time after the boys have gone to bed. A few years ago we converted our garage into a studio which I share with my husband. He is a gamer so our space is part computer room and part studio.

Tips for other etsy artists?
PHOTOGRAPHY! There is nothing worse then bad photos on Etsy. When customers can't physically see and touch the product you really need to make sure your photos are fantastic and accurately portray your products.

Most important thing you've changed about your shop or products since starting on etsy?
My whole product range has changed completely since I first joined Etsy. I used to make button jewellery however in the last 18 months my style has changed dramatically and I have been working with shrink plastics and resin.

I am obsessed with jewellery so I have bought a few things lately from fellow Aussie designers Danidot and ikandi.

Widget to find items with the same colors as your listing

Some of you know that the etsy contest is just one of many random little scripts I've written with the etsy API, it's just so darn fun to tinker with!

So I have a listing color app:spacefem.com/etsy/listingcolor.php. It lets you put in a listing ID (these are easy to find) and it tells you items that match with it (I have a basic color app too, that just lets you put in a color)

Anyway I used the listing color search to find items that might go well with this week's Welcome Wednesday winner, a shop that opened seven days before the contest!

Here was her winning photo:
